Almost everyone uses batteries in everyday life, whether in remote controls , kitchen clocks , cars , or RVs . If you haven't yet dealt with DC systems , self-sufficient solar systems , or off-grid power plants , you probably haven't given much thought to battery voltage . However, as soon as you start thinking about mobile power supplies , power stations , or solar panels , you'll have to decide between 12-volt and 24-volt battery systems .

What is the voltage of the electrical system of a car, motorhome, or boat?

The fundamental knowledge required to understand a battery system is the concept of voltage (volts) . Voltage is the electrical pressure necessary to transmit current.

Common battery systems:

  • 12-volt battery systems: Standard in most vehicles (cars, motorhomes, boats). Maximum output approx. 12.8 volts. Perfect for starters, lights, refrigerators , and ignition.
  • 24-volt battery systems: Maximum output approx. 25.6 volts. Used in larger vehicles, more complex solar systems , or balcony power plants .

Note: The nominal voltage of 12 volts may vary slightly depending on the state of charge and load.

Construction of a 24-volt battery system

Larger trucks, buses or motorhomes with high power requirements use 24-volt battery systems .

Setup options:

  • Direct 24-volt battery: Rare, expensive, difficult to obtain.
  • Connecting two 12-volt batteries in series: requires more space, but is flexible and widespread.

Series connection of 12-volt batteries

The most common method to create a 24 volt system is to connect two 12-volt batteries in series .

How it works:

  • Negative terminal of the first battery → Positive terminal of the second battery
  • Voltage adds up, capacity remains the same
  • Example: 2 batteries at 12 volts, 100 Ah each → Result: 24 volts, 100 Ah

Comparison of 12-volt vs. 24-volt battery systems

12 Volt Systems:

  • Widely used, compatible with all standard devices
  • Ideal for small solar systems , power stations and short cable lengths
  • Only one battery is needed.

24 Volt Systems:

  • Advantage: Thinner cables → less space required and lower costs
  • Less current (amperes) required, yet the same performance
  • Disadvantage: Many devices are designed for 12 volts → DC-DC converter required (approx. 4% energy loss)

Conclusion: A 24-volt system is worthwhile for larger motorhomes, extensive solar systems , or self-sufficient camping .

Determine energy requirements

Before choosing a battery system, it is important to know your daily energy requirements :

  • Determine the power consumption in watts of all devices
  • For < 3000 Watt AC → 12 Volt system sufficient
  • For > 3000 Watt AC → 24 Volt system makes sense
  • For systems > 6000 watts AC or off-grid systems → a 48-volt system can be advantageous


    Tip: 48 volts are particularly efficient for off-grid systems , balcony power plants , or larger self-sufficient systems.
